Auditorium of the Institut de Franceautore: Atelier Barani
TOPICS: SCHOOL AND SOCIETY
The Auditorium of the Institut de France is part of the Institute’s subtle plan to open the harmonic edifice to the Seine. Consisting of many strata, this palimpsestic site imposes its law and its density. The three entities – hall, offices, auditorium – are sutured by shafts of light. With immemorial nobility, the auditorium sets up a correspondence with the Coupole and the great Salle des Séances; the stone base evokes the excavation of the site, while wood is developed in a honeycomb structure on the walls and coffered ceiling. Subtle,
moveable panels offer a high-tech reinterpretation – both technical and acoustical – of an ancient amphitheatre.
